Meet Mythu Sivapalan - Technical Lead

As a Technical Lead on the Game Backend, my primary objective is to align future work with our technical vision, support the team with current initiatives, be a mentor to my peers as they grow professionally, and be accountable for the output of my team. As a backend team, our goal is to support the functionalities in the game. Ultimately, we enable our feature teams to build AMAZING things in the game.

Why Prodigy?

Prodigy's mission of helping every student in the world love learning is what pulled me towards the company. When I was in school, I used to play Math Circus, and I LOVED IT. I remember wishing that all subjects had a game that I could play. I never imagined that I would one day be working towards that dream.

It also seemed like a great place to work. Spoiler alert: it is a great place to work. The first two months I worked here, I really came to understand just how much Prodigy values growth. Not only did they have a product that ensures the growth of students, but I could see they also genuinely cared about the growth of their employees.

Which is your favourite core value of ours?

My favorite core value has to be Radical Candor. I love this value because feedback matters. It’s the catalyst for growth. If there is no feedback, there is little need for change. But feedback alone isn’t enough. In order to have a wonderful work culture, you have to care personally. That is why the culture at Prodigy works well. When you have employees that understand the principles of Radical Candor, then you have teams that truly care about each other. I see this in practice on my team when we do demos or when developers do pair-programming. We share insights and actively help each other grow within our roles.

What’s one thing that sets apart working here from other places?

Fan mail from children! I absolutely love the tweets from students around the world that get shared at our all-hands presentations. It brings me so much joy to see the impact we are making as a company. We also get critical feedback, and these are even more valuable. We're also able to make school visits to see how students are using Prodigy in the classroom. It’s so wonderful to see students passionate about the gameplay and pets in the game.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Having full control of time, moving faster than it or slower. Being able to go forward or backward in time. It would be so liberating to have that ability. Even as a thought experiment, imagine if time was no longer inevitable.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Poutine. Although, if I ate that every day, I probably won’t have too long of a life. I guess in this fantasy, it’s a good thing I’d have the ability to control time...
